DIY Appliance Repair Tips

Wait! Before you call an appliance repair for help, you should be able to keep your household appliances in good shape with the help of the tips in this post.

1. Smelly Washing Machine

A bad odor in your washing machine defeats the reason for the appliance! If you are trying to wash your clothes so that they’re fresh and clean, but your machine won’t cooperate, run an empty cycle in hot water with two cups of white vinegar and a half-cup of baking soda to remove the unpleasant odor. This issue commonly occurs in front-loading machines. To prevent odors in the future, leave the door open in between cycles to let it dry out.

2. Inefficient Refrigerant

A lukewarm refrigerator is never a welcome sign. A warm refrigerator won’t keep beverages cool, and the food inside could also be in danger of going rotten! In a lot of cases, your refrigerator will not require professional repair; instead the inside might just need a cleaning. Or the coils on the back of the appliance are in need of cleaning.

Unplug the refrigerator and drag it out from the wall prior to cleaning the coils. If you do not notice instant cooling improvement, it’s best to contact a professional appliance repair service.

3. Clicking Igniter on Stove

If the igniter on your gas-powered stove clicks nonstop and the burner does not light, inspect to be sure your burner lid is tightened and correctly aligned. You could possibly experience this if you have recently had a boil over or spill on your stovetop.

Otherwise, the source is likely to be a dirty igniter. To clean the igniter on a gas-powered stove, first remove the burner top and clear off any debris. You can also use a pin to pick dirt from the grooves of the igniter. If that does not fix the issue, it’s best to not disassemble a lighter unless you have the training; hire a professional appliance repairman to diagnose the issue.

4. Broken Garbage Disposal

Your garbage disposal has self-protection with its own overload trip. If it gets filled up, overheats, runs for too much time, or has a different problem, your disposal could simply need to be reset rather than replaced. Be sure the power switch is turned OFF. Next, locate the button on the disposal unit under the sink and press the switch. If the switch does not stay in, just wait ten minutes and press it again. Turn on the water and then turn the button on.

If the garbage disposal in the kitchen sink is filled with food and you hear nothing but a humming noise instead of the grinding of waste, you might need to twist the disposal blades using a hex key tool to clear the clog. Next, push in the reset switch to get the garbage disposal grinding again. If the previous tips don’t get the disposal working like it is supposed to, please don’t succumb to the temptation to stick one of your arms down into the disposal to figure things out. Be safe and schedule an appointment with a professional appliance service.

5. No Power from Outlet

In the bathroom or kitchen, the outlets must be equipped with GFCI capabilities to protect people against harm in wet environments. If a GFCI outlet is not generating power, push the red reset button to see if it restores power.

If it does not, or if you’re trying on a standard electrical outlet, make sure that a breaker hasn’t been tripped in the home’s circuit breaker box. If you are unsure if a breaker has been tripped, switch it to the OFF position and then flip it back to the ON position. Just remember, safety around electrical outlets is a must. Should you have doubts, call a professional repairman.

6. Wobbling Washing Machine

A wobbling washing machine will often produce quite a obnoxious racket and isn’t a ideal method to get wash clothing. If your washing machine starts shaking, the machine could be broken. In order to fix this issue, rotate the legs of the washing machine to lift or lower all corners until it’s level. Another possible case is the washer is not balanced. Crack open the lid and rearrange the shirts and pants so that they are more evenly dispersed inside of the drum of the washing machine.

Doing this can help the washing machine to not need to work quite as hard. If you try to arrange the clothes a few times without luck, do not ignore the problem. You could have a loosened motor or drum mount to fix, which can be easy for a professional technician to repair. But continuing to use your washer with this problem could damage other pieces and cause a more significant repair over time.
